Faithfulness in the Ordinary: Why What You Do Matters More Than You Know

The book of Ruth is small—only four chapters—but it carries a profound message for those who serve faithfully, often behind the scenes, often without recognition, and often without immediate reward.

Ruth’s story begins in loss. She is a widow, a foreigner, and economically vulnerable. Nothing about her situation suggests influence, security, or visibility. Yet what sets Ruth apart is not her position—it’s her posture.

When given the opportunity to walk away, Ruth chooses faithfulness.

“Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16)

Ruth commits herself without knowing how the story will turn out. She doesn’t have a detailed plan—only loyalty, humility, and trust. That’s often where meaningful service begins for many of us too: choosing to say yes even when outcomes are unclear and the work feels costly.

Then Ruth does something remarkably ordinary—she goes to work. She gleans in the fields, doing what is available to her. No spotlight. No recognition. No applause. Just showing up and doing the next right thing.

Scripture says,

“As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz…” (Ruth 2:3)

What looks accidental to us is never accidental to God.

Ruth’s faithfulness places her directly in the path of provision, protection, and redemption. God uses her quiet obedience to weave a much bigger story—one that ultimately leads to the lineage of King David, and later, Jesus Himself.

What’s striking is that Ruth never sees the full impact of her faithfulness while she’s living it. She simply keeps showing up with integrity and courage.

That truth matters deeply for us.

So much of the work you do is unseen. It doesn’t always feel dramatic or measurable. Sometimes it looks like consistency, presence, patience, and staying when it would be easier to step away. But Scripture reminds us that God builds redemptive stories through faithfulness in the ordinary, not just through big moments.

You may not see the fruit today.
You may not fully know how God is using your “yes.”
But God is always at work—through willing hearts and faithful hands.

Your faithfulness matters.
Your obedience matters.
Your steady commitment makes a real difference.

God sees it. And He is weaving more than you can imagine.

A Prayer for Our Volunteers and Staff

Lord, help us to be faithful in the places You have called us. Teach us to trust You when the work feels unseen and the outcome unclear. Thank You that You are always at work, weaving redemption through obedience. Strengthen our hearts to say yes—again and again. Amen.
