The God of the Details

One of the greatest privileges of ministry is getting a front-row seat to watch God work in ways that could never be planned.

At our recent golf tournament and silent auction, the team experienced one of those moments.

Among the auction items was a stunning, John Attencio diamond pendant. Valued at $4,575, it was one of the most significant items in the auction. As the event approached, AmyBeth Brower found herself praying specifically over that gift. It was a generous donation, and she quietly asked the Lord to provide the right buyer and use it to bless the ministry.

To protect the value of the item, a reserve was placed on the pendant so it would not sell for less than half its retail value.

As auction day unfolded, bids poured in on items throughout the event. People were having fun, supporting the mission, and engaging with generosity. Yet as the afternoon wore on, the pendant still had not reached the reserve price.

The auction was set to close at 1:30 p.m.

At 1:25 p.m., a man AmyBeth did not recognize stopped to look closely at the pendant.

"There are still five minutes left if you're interested," she told him.

He smiled and replied, "I'm not even here with your tournament."

"That's okay," AmyBeth said. "I can get you registered and help you place a bid right now."

He asked about the current bid and then about the reserve. When AmyBeth told him the amount, he immediately responded, "I can do that."

In just a couple of minutes, she helped him register and place a bid. Then she laughed and told him, "In about two minutes, you're going to get an email telling you that you just won."

That's when his eyes began to well up.

"I just proposed to my girlfriend a few days ago," he said. "Would you like to see the ring?"

He pulled out a photo of a beautiful John Atencio engagement ring.

It matched the pendant. God had not just provided a buyer, but the absolute right buyer. He had orchestrated a blessing for all of us that day.

Of all the things he could have been doing that afternoon, he happened to walk past the auction table just five minutes before bidding closed. Of all the jewelry pieces that could have been donated, it was the perfect match to the ring he had just used to ask the woman he loves to marry him.

What began as a prayer about an auction item became a reminder that God is involved in details far bigger than fundraising goals.

The pendant became a blessing for a newly engaged couple. The donation helped raise thousands of additional dollars to support women rebuilding their lives after trafficking and exploitation. And for those standing there that afternoon, it became a tangible reminder that God is already at work in ways we cannot see.

Sometimes His provision comes through major gifts. Sometimes it comes through answered prayers. Sometimes it arrives in the final five minutes of an auction.

At the golf tournament, the Safe Places team watched friendships deepen, new supporters engage with the mission, volunteers serve faithfully, and generosity overflow in countless ways. The funds raised that day will continue to ripple outward through outreach, housing, discipleship, and care for women seeking a new beginning.

And somewhere, a bride-to-be now has a pendant that perfectly matches her engagement ring.

Only God could write a story like that.
